Hey Gorgeous ! Bomkai Silk Sarees is the soul of Odisha Handloom and knowing a little about them can help you understand their uniqueness and learn a little about their creation. A few months ago one of our customers had a detailed explaination regarding them and it should be of interest to you but before we go along some basic lessons on handloom sarees, each of them constitute of a body, a pallu or Anchal and the border.
Bomkai Silk saree is woven by keeping warp (length of saree) stretched and extended while weft (breadth of saree) threads are interwoven within it. “Dobby”, “Jaala”, “Jacquard” techniques are used for this. Prominent designs are Dancing doll, chariot, tree, horse, duck, tortoise, fish, buta/buti, boita (boat), creepers etc. Motifs used are Kanthiphula, atasi flower, bitter gourd flower, fly, birds, peacock, fish lotus, damru etc in geometrical forms. Border motifs and rows of kumbha (temple spires) are seen. Now how does all of these facts help you? Answer, now you know the reason the motifs in a saree are of prominence and unique to the rest of the country and stating that it is a handloom product the fabric is pure cotton and extremely breathable.
